A computer is considered essential for study at VCU and personal ownership of a computer is required for enrolled students. Some programs require students to bring laptop computers to class.  However, iPads, netbooks, Chromebooks, Android-based tablets, eReaders, and other similar devices may not be able to run the software needed in some classes and may not be suitable as a student’s primary computer.  Additionally, a Microsoft Surface Pro or newer may not be sufficient for all classes. Students are advised to contact their school for program-specific computing requirements.

If bringing a computer you already own:

  • It should not be more than two years old
  • Have at least 8GB of RAM
  • Have at least one USB port and WiFi

If you’re buying a new computer, we recommend that at a minimum include:

  • 8GB RAM
  • Have an i5 or greater/equivalent CPU
  • Windows 10, or macOS 10.14*
  • an Ethernet port or adaptor and WiFi

Also strongly encouraged:

  • Include an accidental damage protection warranty More Info
  • Consider an SSD hard drive for better system battery life and performance
  • Purchase your computer through RamTech for the best support and service
